Parking space levy

The NSW Treasurer, The Hon. Eric Roozendaal MLC, has announced changes to taxes, duties and benefits as part of the 2008 Mini-Budget. Read more information on the changes announced in the 2008 Mini-Budget.

A parking space levy is imposed on owners of liable spaces on 1 July each year and is payable on 1 September each year.

From 1 July 2008 the parking space levy rate has increased in category 1 to $950 per space and in category 2 the rate has increased to $470 per space.

What the levy does

The levy is used to develop public transport infrastructure. It was introduced to discourage car use in business districts by imposing a levy on off-street commercial and office parking spaces, including parking spaces in parking stations.

The revenue is directly used to finance, develop and maintain infrastructure that facilitates access to and encourages the use of public transport to and from the business districts where the levy applies.
